Why is it that societies of great abundance — where individuals are offered more freedom and choice (personal, professional, material) than ever before — are now witnessing a near-epidemic of depression? This is the core question of the whole discussion.
Barry Schwartz makes a passionate call for "practical wisdom" as an antidote to a society gone mad with bureaucracy. He argues powerfully that rules often fail us, incentives often backfire, and practical, everyday wisdom will help rebuild our world.
Barry Schwartz, a psychologist, studies the link between economics and psychology, offering startling insights into modern life. Lately, working with Ken Sharpe, he's studying wisdom, something that has lost among ppl nowadays.Between Incentive and rules, the answer to this question is a paradox, it would never be proportional. There are a few issues being talked here.
1. Practical wisdom
It is a combination of moral will and moral skill.
Brilliance is rampant. There are people who are brilliant but lack of wisdom. Without wisdom, brilliance is not enough. In this cutting edge environment, we are bound by rules and regulation. Moral rules is chipped away by the rules that deprives us of the opportunity to improvise and learn.
2. Is two-reason better than one ?
Not necessary. Years back in 2005 Switzerland, two respective community are asked and requested for a nuclear dump. The community A, abt 50% agrees to the project as it has to be dumped in somewhere else and this is considered as a citizen's responsibility to agree on this motion.
The community B, however ware requested to do the same with a slightly different question? " Everyone is paid for the salary, Would u allow the nuclear dump to be placed in ur community? There are supposedly 2 reasons, responsibility and getting paid to support the motion. But the result turns out only 25% of residents agree.
Is not how many reasons u need to do one thing? It is which reason that serves ur interest the best.
3. Incentive
People need living. Any incentive system can be subverted by a bad will. But, excessive reliance on incentive demoralizes your professional activity in two senses: It makes the ppl engaged in the activity to lose morale and It makes the activity itself to lose morality.
Barack Obama, before inaugurated, he mentioned Ask not is it profitable, but is it right?
Everyone is inspired by moral hero.
With the right will, do the right thing, in the right way and this is practical wisdom.
